Course Description:
This course examines what makes furniture perform in public spaces, drawing on 40+ years of designing and building for libraries, higher education, K-12, courtrooms, and airports. Aesthetics, function, and durability should live in harmony, and in the public space environment durability carries the most weight. The course breaks down the basic construction of tables, seating, workstations, upholstery fabrics, and integrated power, identifies the vulnerable points in each, and traces how three forces shape a product’s lifespan: people, cleaning, and food. Attendees leave with specific recommendations on core materials, edge details and radii, joinery, foam density, fabric selection, and power connections, along with the maintenance questions worth asking before a space is specified.
