Increase Circulation with a Playful & Multi-functional Book Display

Cubit is the latest addition to our growing display series, joining Bricks and Blocks—two sturdy, architectural displays designed to add visual sophistication while boosting book circulation.

Cubit was developed in response to the ever-evolving needs of librarians. Designed to solve the following problems:

Creatively Increase Book Circulation
Provide a Multi-functional Solution
Playfully Enhance Engagement

Designing the new display to solve these three problems didn’t happen over night. The journey was three-part, with many exciting aha moments along the way.

Discovery Phase #1 Ideation and Initial Design

Our product development team collaborated closely with librarians, conducting extensive research to understand their daily needs. The first phase focused on conceptualizing the construction of this new display. This input directly shaped the early box-like form and size explorations. We also began exploring a book bin fitting into the larger box. From the beginning, it was clear: we wanted a display that could creatively promote book circulation while adding innovative functionality to library environments.

Discovery Phase #2 Designing to Provide Multi-functional Solutions

In the second phase, our focus shifted to making Cubit truly multi-functional incorporating three features: display, browsing bin, and storage. We explored various cubby designs so librarians can feature books on top, or flip it, and use it as bin to hold books or objects that can be freely perused. We also played with dividers and bin size with book visibility and access in mind. Lastly, we engineered a third layer of functionality—storage space at the base of the compact unit allows librarians to rotate displayed items periodically. Adding handles ensured these three layers work together, delivering a highly adaptable solution for modern libraries, schools, and universities.

Discovery Phase #3 Emphasizing Engagement And Playfulness

The final phase brought Cubit’s playful personality and interactable nature to life. We designed Cubit to be offered in a 36″ h and 24″ h version; inclusive to various patron heights and ages so books and materials are easy for all to see, reach and engage with. With playfulness in mind, we decided to feature this new display in pastel green, blue, and violet metal powder coat finishes. Along with the inviting handles, hidden casters empower librarians to confidently move and adapt Cubit based on the moment’s needs.
