Project: Terminal Modernization and Expansion
Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids recently completed a $121 million terminal modernization, transforming a 94,000 square foot facility into a 240,000 square foot modern passenger experience. Delivered across four phases over more than a decade, the project is featured as the cover story in the May 2026 issue of Airport Improvement magazine. Agati Gee Modular Lounge seating and Power Bar charging tables are featured throughout the post security concourse.
Mead & Hunt served as architect of record across all four phases. “The design driver was to deliver a timeless aesthetic that would seamlessly blend over the phases,” National Design Leader Matt Dubbe told Airport Improvement Magazine. Their solution was a material palette of timber, steel, glass, and stone rooted in the identity of eastern Iowa, naturally matched with the materials used in Agati’s airport furniture.
As airlines shifted from 50 seat regional jets to larger narrow body aircraft, the seating strategy had to evolve. Dubbe described the goal in Airport Improvement: “The integration of beam seats, soft seats and standing tables provides choices.” CID recognized the needs of different passenger types and reflected that in their furniture selections, a growing trend in airport environments nationally.
Agati Power Bar charging tables give travelers powered work and dining surfaces within sight of their gates. Gee Occasional Tables provide powered side surfaces between lounge seats, ensuring virtually every seating position has arm’s reach access to power. “The total cost of ownership over 30 years far outweighs the initial construction cost,” Airport Director Marty Lenss told Airport Improvement. “We wanted systems that were tried, true and maintainable”. The project was featured as the cover story in the May 2026 issue of Airport Improvement Magazine.
