Special Education Teacher with Study Pods

REAL STORIES INSIDE CLASSROOMS

Wanting to learn first-hand, from Teachers, how the PODs were working in their Middle School classrooms, we dropped in on Mario Rocha. Mr. Rocha couldn’t have been more generous with a surprise visit in the middle of a school day! He told us:

“We use the PODs as a quiet space for kids to take tests, or to take breaks if they’re overstimulated. Kids also just choose to sit in there. Sometimes two kids cram in together! The POD gives students with disabilities the sense that its ‘my own little room.’“

Mr. Rocha has been using the PODS for 3 years, and he said they are always utilized because kids choose to sit in them. Students can have a cozy, private seating area, and a view of the classroom at the same time.

“For Special Ed, it’s good to have a variety, so I’ve moved these around. They’re easy to move and I’ve moved them around the room in 3 different spots.

Our students like to work and do their own thing. With the PODs, students feel like they have their own little space. They can even charge with the outlets. But I can still monitor them at the same time. They are especially good for testing.”

Curious about the application of PODs in High Schools, we asked a High School Teacher for feedback, too. Here’s what they had to say.

“They’re awesome! There are two PODs in my classroom and they’re mostly used by students with one-on-one aides. That is where they go for one-on-one instruction.

The structure helps students focus and lessens distractions. It is also very useful for pinning visuals. I love the space on the side where students can put backpacks or materials and the outlet for charging.”

INCLUSION FOR DIFFERENT ABILITIES

The POD Carrel offers similar respit for wheelchair users. Meeting ADA standards, it gives students the comfort of a curved, partially-enclosed space. Normalizing differences, the POD Carrel can be configured with other PODs as seen in the four leaf clover cluster of 3 regular PODs and 1 POD Carrel.

As a wheelchair accessible study space, this carrel has room for a wheelchair to pull up to the table, accessible table surface height, and knee clearance. Keeping the classroom flexible, the POD Carrel can also be used as a traditional carrel with a pull up chair. Combine the PODs to form a variety of shapes, or use them independently.
